Your Code... your environment... Your Choices...
The Trossen Robotics System of development offers you the freedom to develop the "brains" and behavior of a robot using your code of choice and your environment of choice.

How it all began...
The concept of the Trossen Robotics System was born from a very simple, but revolutionary idea. One day not too long ago our chief architect, Matt Trossen, stood on top of a mountain (his desk) and declared,

"What is with all these proprietary systems? I have a vision! A vision that someday anyone with a decent level of programming skill can develop a robot using languages they already know and the plain everyday computer they already own!"

After Matt was talked down off his desk by local authorities and a bribe of frozen Zingers we all sat down to design such a system and that is exactly what we did.

A Core Philosophy
From the very beginning we knew that we wanted to create the most open source robotics system the world has ever seen. This meant our solution had to contain one very important concept in it's core. That we would never constrict a customer to proprietary systems. This meant that we had to design a modular system which allowed users the freedom to pick the technologies, languages, and environments of their preference.

This is a major leap from the old standard of companies designing their profit revenues around expensive proprietary solutions. Unfortunately this also boxes in users to the limits of what those proprietary systems can do. Allowing only the select few who are using those same systems to share code, which is almost never.

We felt that a model could be designed which allowed for open source sharing while not losing our ability to earn a profit and grow as a company. We have stuck to this core concept and never strayed.

You will notice that our model has two distinct and unique attributes.
    1) We sell development tools, not an environment.
  2) We have designed our tools around an open source standard and support the free sharing of robotics code and projects.

By allowing people to use a common set of tools and standards which work for many languages on all the major platforms we have opened the doors to allow for a community of developers to begin sharing their advancements with each other. A much needed evolution in the realm of robotics development. For far too long people have been scrapping their robots together independently. Not only has everyone been reinventing the robot-wheel over and over again they have also been creating projects that are far to unique to be truly shared by other developers.

While we must sell our hardware and software tools like any regular company our goal has always been to provide these solutions as tools designed to promote the "open source" philosophy of sharing code.

We do not charge open community users for any of the example code or projects and never will. We will continue to build a community of people sharing open source code, solutions, and projects as well as maintain a growing archive of these solution on our site.

It is only by sharing and standing upon the shoulders of those who have gone before us that we can all advance robotics together into the technology we know it will become.
