Robotics Electronics Hardware Engineering Intern - 2024 Fall/Winter

Full Time | On-Site

Date: 07/30/24

Trossen Robotics has a robust internship/apprenticeship program where students work alongside experienced engineers to be mentored and build valuable engineering skills that can not be taught in a classroom. We don’t stick our interns in a corner to grind away on boring projects for months. Our interns work hands on with the whole team on the company's top tier projects.

Interns will be in design & strategy meetings, participate in key architectural decisions, and exposed to the full spectrum of product design and development in the world of robotics. We also host build nights where engineers from all departments hang out and work on company and personal projects where we order pizza, crank up the radio and have a good time building robots and skill development after hours.

At Trossen Robotics we maintain a casual atmosphere while working on serious projects in a bleeding edge industry. If you want to accelerate your learning, build valuable experience on your resume, and have fun doing it, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading the design and development of electronics hardware for industrial mobile robots and research-grade manipulators

  • Creating PCB schematics and layouts for embedded microcontroller-based (ARM Cortex, STM32) mobile robotics controllers and DC servo motor controllers

  • Design embedded digital communication interfaces for CAN, Ethernet, and serial

  • Power systems design including power regulation, filtering, overpower protection, and battery management

  • DC Servo motor control systems design, including establishing technical requirements, pairing compatible motor controllers, and sourcing appropriate COTS components

  • Testing and evaluation of hardware assemblies and off-the-shelf components

  • Spec and source battery packs

  • Formulating technical specifications and requirements

  • Writing detailed technical documentation

  • Designing cable harness and layouts

  • Collaborating with other engineering departments

Requirements:

  • Actively pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or a related field at the time of the internship

  • Proficiency with a PCB CAD software like Altium, EAGLE, or KiCad

  • Knowledge of digital communication technologies and related hardware (CAN, Ethernet, Serial)

  • Solid foundation in electrical engineering principles including power electronics and signal processing

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to teach yourself and learn new skills on the job
